How to Find Destinations in DEVONthink

As your databases grow, you have more to choose from and navigate through when working in DEVONthink. Some menus can become quite long when displaying your entire database structures. But version 4 makes this easier with a simple control.

If you’re moving objects or jumping to different locations and documents, many popups in DEVONthink have a built-in search field: Data > Move to, Go > To Group, and Go > To Document. If you’re using the Sorter to add documents to your databases, the Navigation view also has a search field. And if you import external files with the Files > Import > Destination setting set to Select group, like we discussed in a previous blog post, the group selector also has a search field. In DEVONthink 4, you will now find such a search field in other familiar places as well.

Control-click a document and choose Move To. You are presented with a list of locations, often a very long list. Now, you’ll find a search field at the top. Start typing to filter the list down to just the closest matching locations. You will also see this field in the Duplicate To and Replicate To submenus. Also, when you’re clipping content or taking notes of any kind via the Sorter, the Location menu has this search field too.

Lastly, in View > Sidebar: Import …

  • In the scan controls, choose To: Database and you can search the Group menu.
  • In the Emails section, quickly search in the Destination menu.
