DEVONthink offers built-in text editors for common formats like Markdown or rich text, so you can easily edit your texts directly in our application. With DEVONthink 4, we have improved the editors and added new features and settings to make note taking more comfortable. Here is a look at the most important new features:

  • Use the new text settings of DEVONthink 4 in Settings > Editing > Format to make writing a bit more comfortable on the eyes: Max. Line Width, Margin, and Line Spacing or Line Height Multiple.
  • Format > Typewriter-like Scrolling lets you keep the active line of text in the middle of the screen while editing, similar to some other popular apps.
  • Add PDF page bookmarks to a PDF document’s table of contents via the Content: Thumbnails inspector or by choosing Add To > Table of Contents from the context menu on a PDF page. You can also edit and reorganize a document’s chapters and bookmarks in the Content: Table of Contents inspector. This also works in DEVONthink To Go.
  • Edit the outlines of rich text and Markdown documents in the Content: Table of Contents inspector. Drag sections to another position, effectively modifying the document’s contents.
  • Convert Markdown documents with section headers to PDF documents, preserving the sections as a proper table of contents.
  • Markdown supports live scrolling in Side-by-Side mode, matching the position of the editing pane with the rendered view.
  • Markdown now has its own specific font setting. Settings > Editing > Format > Markdown Font is used for the source text but also applies to the rendered preview if there is no specific CSS styling.
  • WYSIWYG editing is now split into two features, that you can specify in Settings > Files > Markdown > Markdown Display. Syntax highlighting creates the hybrid view in the source text, e.g., displaying bold text in a bold font. But the new WYSIWYG images & links option renders images and displays links as active hyperlinks in the source. So instead of showing raw Markdown links, e.g., [Baby Goat Jumping](img/babygoat.gif), it shows the linked image while you’re editing. To modify an image link, select the image and choose Edit Image from the context menu to display the link information. To modify a URL, select the text and choose Edit Link from the Format or context menu.
