The Web Clipping Options in DEVONthink
September 30, 2025 — Jim Neumann

Clipping web content is a much used and discussed feature in DEVONthink. There are numerous ways to import web content into DEVONthink, e.g., with our browser extension, with bookmarklets, or with the print dialog. To see the range of options in one place, here is a list of them.
- Use the print dialog to create a PDF. You can even “print” directly to DEVONthink.
- Clip to a specific location and in a variety of formats with our browser extension via DEVONthink’s Sorter.
- Use the Share menu > Add to DEVONthink to capture a page, also via the Sorter.
- Add a bookmark to your database via Data > New > Bookmark and use the commands in the Tools > Document: Capture menu.
- Install bookmarklets in the Favorites bar of your browser to capture web pages in specific formats. The Selection bookmarklet captures plain text. There is also a separate tip on how to use bookmarklets.
- With text selected on a web page, use the application’s Services menu to capture in certain formats, e.g., Take Rich Note. Note, the available options are governed by what the browser is reporting. For example, Safari reports a selection as rich text and Firefox reports plain text. You can even append subsequent selections to an existing document, e.g., Append Rich Note.
- With text selected, copy it. Then in DEVONthink, press ⌘N or choose Data > New > With Clipboard to create a new document appropriate to the type of content copied.
- Select text or an image, then drag and drop it into DEVONthink.
- Capture pages via scripting, e.g., including some of our application-specific scripts in the global Scripts menu.
Please note we are currently investigating an issue with our browser extension in Safari and the Share extension on macOS Tahoe. This list should provide many alternative mechanisms to continue clipping.
