DEVONthink 3.5.2

13. August 2020 — Eric Böhnisch-Volkmann

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — DEVONtechnologies updates its documentation and information manager DEVONthink to version 3.5.2. The maintenance update brings the first round of changes for macOS Big Sur and runs natively on Apple silicon. It also makes the sync engine more efficient and resuming interrupted synchronizations more reliable. Other enhancements include better handling of nested tags, support for importing bookmarks from the Brave browser, and more.

DEVONthink is DEVONtechnologies’ document and information management solution. It supports a large variety of file formats and stores them in a database enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI). Many document formats can be directly viewed, edited, and annotated. A powerful search language finds documents in an instant, smart groups keep them always at hand.

Sophisticated organization tools, AI-based techniques that handle even the largest collections, and numerous integration options make DEVONthink the work environment of choice for researchers, lawyers, and educators. Smart rules, flexible reminders, and deep AppleScript support allow automating even complex repeating tasks. And with its fast, reliable, and secure synchronization users keep their data available on all their Macs. DEVONthink To Go for iPad and iPhone completes the DEVONthink ecosystem.

  • Keep your data together in one place
  • Scan your paper, archive your email
  • Let artificial intelligence help you organize your data
  • Automate tasks with smart rules and reminders
  • Sync your data to all your devices, fast and secure
  • Share your data with anyone, whether they use Mac or PC

New in DEVONthink 3.5.2

This maintenance update to DEVONthink 3 brings the first round of changes for macOS Big Sur. In addition, DEVONthink 3.5.2 comes as a universal binary that runs natively on both Intel-based Macs and future Macs built around ARM processors (currently dubbed “Apple silicon”).

The synchronization is more efficient and uses less cloud or disk space for items that haven’t been changed in a long time. Resuming interrupted syncs is also more reliable, and so is synchronizing via Dropbox.

Other changes improve the usability, e.g., a new submenu that lets users open new windows directly from the Dock icon, or add compatibility to third-party applications. DEVONthink 3.5.2 imports bookmarks also from the Brave web browser and checks existing bookmarks for validity via a new smart rule action. The update makes interacting with the sidebar again more comfortable, and reflects changes to items in the Reading List automatically.

DEVONthink 3.5.2 also brings enhancements to many other parts of the application, from better handling of nested tags when moving or duplicating items to improvements for WikiLinks, Markdown documents, and PDFs. Prism syntax highlighting supports Python, Perl, and PHP now, See Also & Classify works more precisely with documents like email messages with no text but only image attachments, and clicking file links no longer launches the default application if the linked file is part of the database.

Finally, DEVONthink 3.5.2 better imports files and folders exported from ELO Office, clips PDF from Google Chrome more reliably, and switches the graphic mode when executing background tasks to save battery life on some MacBooks. Of course, the update also improves the overall performance and reliability, and fixes bugs.

With macOS Big Sur and the transition to their own ARM processors Apple breathes new life into the Mac platform. So starting with this maintenance release we are beginning to adjust DEVONthink for the interface changes in Big Sur (but there’s still work to do) and deliver it as universal binary for Intel and ARM processors. If you have access to a Developer Transition Kit then here’s DEVONthink for you running at full speed on the architecture that is the future of the Mac.
