Press Release
DEVONthink 3.8
Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — DEVONtechnologies updates its documentation and information manager DEVONthink to version 3.8. A new integrity check makes sure files are healthy and unaltered. Mentions reveal more relationships between documents and a whole bunch of enhancements make especially editing Markdown more comfortable. JavaScript is a new option for automating DEVONthink. The update also cleans up the preferences and adds many new menu commands, keyboard shortcuts, and AppleScript commands and properties.
DEVONthink is DEVONtechnologies’ document and information management solution. It supports a large variety of file formats and stores them in a database enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI). Many document formats can be directly viewed, edited, and annotated. A powerful search language finds documents in an instant, smart groups keep them always at hand.
Sophisticated organization tools, AI-based techniques that handle even the largest collections, and numerous integration options make DEVONthink the work environment of choice for researchers, lawyers, journalists, writers, and educators. Smart rules, flexible reminders, and deep AppleScript support allow automating even complex repeating tasks. And with its fast, reliable, and secure synchronization users keep their data available on all their Macs. DEVONthink To Go for iPad and iPhone completes the DEVONthink ecosystem.

New in DEVONthink 3.8
To help ensure databases are healthy, DEVONthink now stores checksums for all files and lets users verify the integrity of their databases, manually or via AppleScript. This makes sure files have not been modified outside of DEVONthink’s control.
As linking documents becomes increasingly commonplace, DEVONthink can now convert WikiLinks to item links which are independent from the linked document’s name. It is also possible to update the link text for item links if the linked document was renamed. A new Mentions inspector introduces a new way of spotting relationships by listing documents that mention the name or aliases of a selected document in their contents. Summarizing mentions creates a new document gathering mentions.
Markdown fans will see more improvements including setting formatting via keyboard shortcuts and quickly adding new lines to lists by pressing the Return key. DEVONthink also allows to specify a default JavaScript that is applied to all Markdown files. Dropping, pasting, and inserting pictures into a Markdown document optionally adds the images directly to a group with a user-specified name. And users working mainly with PDFs will appreciate new highlight, underline, and strike-through tools that are persistent until the tool is changed.
Collected data is only half the story. It’s the connections between the bits of information what distinguishes data from knowledge. DEVONthink’s AI finds many of them automatically and item links and WikiLinks always let users manually draw connections. With backlinks, and now mentions, DEVONthink makes the so created web more visible and approachable than ever.

For toolbar searches DEVONthink allows to set a default search scope in its preferences which have also been rearranged for consistency. The See Also & Classify inspector now presents options to match items by tags instead of content and can limit the suggestions to the current database. With a new option in the Info inspector users relying on indexed files can update broken references in case the externally stored files were moved to new locations.
Finally, automators, seasoned and new, get the option to use JavaScript for Automation (JXA) in the embedded editor, in smart rules, and in reminder alarms. The AppleScript dictionary also received several new commands and properties.
The update, which also improves the reliability and performance, is free for existing users and highly recommended.
