Press Release
DEVONthink 3.8.1
Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — DEVONtechnologies updates its documentation and information manager DEVONthink to version 3.8.1. The release brings various improvements from cross-linking to searching, clipping, Markdown handling, and PDF annotating. Some menus and preferences have been adjusted for clarity or consistency, and scripting support, smart rules, and batch processing have received some attention too. The update also improves the performance, resource consumption, and reliability of the synchronization, as well as the compatibility to an upcoming release of macOS Monterey.
DEVONthink is DEVONtechnologies’ document and information management solution. It supports a large variety of file formats and stores them in a database enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI). Many document formats can be directly viewed, edited, and annotated. A powerful search language finds documents in an instant, smart groups keep them always at hand.
Sophisticated organization tools, AI-based techniques that handle even the largest collections, and numerous integration options make DEVONthink the work environment of choice for researchers, lawyers, journalists, writers, and educators. Smart rules, flexible reminders, and deep AppleScript support allow automating even complex repeating tasks. And with its fast, reliable, and secure synchronization users keep their data available on all their Macs. DEVONthink To Go for iPad and iPhone completes the DEVONthink ecosystem.

New in DEVONthink 3.8.1
This update is all about the small improvements from cross-linking to searching, clipping, Markdown handling, and PDF annotating. Markdown enthusiasts, for example, can now download linked online images and update the image references in the document to the local copies. The resulting document is robust against removed or tempoarily unavailable online resources. Clipping web pages as Markdown automatically downloads images, too, if desired. Other changes enhance Markdown transclusions, clipping dynamic web pages, and converting various document formats to Markdown.
DEVONthink Pro converts sheets, documents with table-like data, to paginated PDFs based on table views or forms, the latter being more printer-friendly. A table of contents is also added to the output. In addition, the way PDF annotations are handled in the Annotations inspector is more consistent to Apple Preview and the table of contents of edited PDFs is validated and rebuilt to reflect changes as needed. The alignment of text annotations can be chosen in the Annotations inspector.
To make editing documents more comfortable, version 3.8.1 reorganizes the Tools menu and introduces a new section with document-related commands, nicely arranged in submenus. Searching has become more comfortable, too, with a new preference that allows to quickly search the currently selected location, and support for searching for multiple file name extensions. Other new preferences allow showing label colors as flags to clean up the visual appearance of group and document lists, and choosing which item count should be shown on the application’s Dock badge.
It’s the attention to detail that make a good tool an excellent one. Whether it’s organizing documents, editing Markdown, working with indexed files, or automating your work with AppleScript — this update for DEVONthink brings more than 150 new small features, improvements, and bug fixes.

Item links are robust URLs for elements stored in DEVONthink that can be used to cross-link documents. Version 3.8.1 brings a new option that keeps linked text automatically updated when the name of the referenced document changes. Working with indexed files becomes faster, safer, and more robust. Scripting support, smart rules, and batch processing have received some attention, too. DEVONthink 3.8.1 improves the performance, resource consumption, and reliability of the synchronization, as well as the compatibility to an upcoming release of macOS Monterey.
The update, which also improves the reliability and performance, is free for existing users and highly recommended.
