DEVONthink To Go 3.5

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — DEVONtechnologies releases DEVONthink To Go 3.5, the iOS counterpart to its Mac-based document and information management solution DEVONthink. The update brings a new editor for plain text, Markdown, RTF, and HTML-based formatted notes including image, tables, Apple Pencil drawings, and scan-to-text. Navigating even large data sets becomes easier with a three-column layout on iPad including keyboard shortcuts.

DEVONthink To Go is DEVONtechnologies’ mobile document and information manager. It stores files of any kind in searchable databases on the device where users can organize them to their needs in groups or with tags. Many file formats can be directly viewed, edited, and annotated, or, if not, opened for editing in other apps. Databases are integrated as a virtual file system into the Files app.

Documents can be marked with a flag, marked unread, labeled, or rated. Text annotations can be added to any document, PDFs also feature the whole range of common annotation types. Many aspects of document workflows can be automated with Shortcuts. DEVONthink To Go’s fast, reliable, and secure synchronization keeps document collections available on other iOS devices as well as Macs running DEVONthink for Mac.

New in DEVONthink To Go 3.5

The new text editor replaces the old editors for plain text, Markdown, and formatted text like RTF or the HTML-based formatted notes. It brings, e.g., images and tables, pencil drawings, videos, and sounds to RTF and formatted notes. On compatible devices, scan-to-text quickly enters text via the camera, and the Apple Pencil can also be used for text entry. Markdown now features WYSIWYG editing similar to DEVONthink for Mac.

All new editing commands are arranged in a toolbar that stays out of the way. iPad users with a hardware keyboard can access many of them also with convenient key commands. Markdown documents received a more consistent styling and allow zooming. Besides, users can provide custom CSS to (re)style their documents without including the same stylesheet over and over again.

Version 3.5 also adopts the three-column layout introduced with iPadOS 14. It allows to access databases, smart groups, and settings without losing the navigation position. Databases can also be reordered. The rewritten and extended key commands present themselves arranged in categories.

Other workflow enhancements include the PDF search field reusing the search term from the main search field. New PDF view options allow to hide the scrubber bar or start PDFs with a single page. Voice notes now support Bluetooth and external microphone input. Video playback no longer stops when leaving the fullscreen presentation.

For many of our users the iPad becomes more and more an integral part of their work style. Especially with a hardware keyboard it’s a lightweight alternative to a MacBook when you’re on the go. Therefore we gave DEVONthink To Go a completely rewritten text editor built on standard iOS technologies. And a modern three-column layout on the iPad lets you work with many databases much more comfortably, at your favorite coffee shop or elsewhere.

When organizing documents, it’s now possible to exclude groups from tagging without using DEVONthink for Mac. Verifying databases finds more problems and tries to repair them. During verification, DEVONthink To Go shows the progress and sends more detailed results to the log. Updating search results is more reliable and Markdown is better preprocessed for search. On supported devices, the app asks for more RAM. This can increase performance and reliability, especially with larger databases.

And finally, on the sync side, DEVONthink To Go 3.5 shows more details in the sync status sheet. It also more thoroughly verifies sync stores, and uploads to and downloads from iCloud (CloudKit) up to 1.5 times faster.

The update improves the reliability and performance, too, and fixes bugs and glitches. It is free for existing users and highly recommended.

DEVONthink To Go 3 can be downloaded for free from the iOS App Store. After a trial period of one month it requires licensing it by either subscribing or buying a one-time purchase. The following options are available:

  • Monthly subscription: US $1.99
  • Yearly subscription: US $14.99
  • One-time purchase: US $39.99

The one-time purchase unlocks all future 3.x versions of DEVONthink To Go. Customers having DEVONthink To Go 2.7.8 or later installed on their device are offered a price-reduced one-time purchase for US $19.99.
