How to Backup Data From Our Apps
February 4, 2025 — Jim Neumann
We are big advocates of being diligent in your backups, especially if your data is important to you. While we think full and incremental machine backups are a great idea, you may want a specific backup for the data of our apps too. Running a secondary backup on a weekly or monthly basis can provide a little extra safety for your DEVONtechnologies data.
Add these things to a separate task in your backup application, where ~ represents your user directory:
DEVONthink
- ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink 3: This includes the Global Inbox, templates, favorites, smart rules, etc.
- ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.devon-technologies.think3: Include this directory if you’ve created or added your own custom scripts.
- ~/Databases: If you’re using the default save location when creating your databases, include this directory to backup your databases.
- If you’re storing your databases in a different location, include them or the folder in which they’re stored.
- If you’re not sure where your databases are located, do a Spotlight search for
(name:dtbase2 OR name:dtsparse) kind:database
.
DEVONagent
- ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONagent: This includes your custom plugins, search sets, and scripts.
Note that these are general instructions for what to backup. How backup tasks are created depends on the specific backup application you’re using. Check with the manual or support for that app.
