Plain text is amazing. It’s an incredibly flexible format, offering many benefits, with next to no downside. On the other hand, plain text is… well, ‘plain’. No font changes. No bold or italic. No images. It’s like a world with no picture books. (mehr)
In this post I want to detail some of the ideas I’ve only touched on previously, and show how these have really changed my workflows. So far my posts have been quite general, and some further detail in areas may be beneficial. The main things I want to talk about are the DEVONthink Pro Office (DTPO) artifical intelligence (AI) and using DTPO as a basic wiki/outliner for larger projects. (mehr)
Markdown is a brilliant way to unobstrusively add basic formatting to plain text files so that the result is readable to both humans and machines. DEVONthink 2.9.8 revamps its Media preferences and adds a new option that lets you choose how you want to open Markdown files, in “pure” editing mode or as graphically pleasing HTML. (mehr)
Applications like Apple Pages, the venerable Microsoft Word, and similar word processing applications may be full of features, but they are also locking your data up in formats that can only be read by those apps. A great alternative is plain text. (mehr)
I wanted to make this post very much an ‘examples of use’ text rather than just listing the features in the app or talking about the sync — again there is a comprehensive manual and many associated articles that do that. I also wanted to preface it with the fact that for me, the main usage for the app is capturing information whilst away from my Mac, and recalling pieces of information that just won’t wait. (mehr)
If you want to synchronize your DEVONthink databases flexibly and securely via an internet-based service such as Dropbox, Box, CloudMe, or just any WebDAV server, we’ve just added a new tutorial for you. (mehr)
When it comes to network safety, many corporations and individuals turn to firewalls and network monitoring applications to control what’s happening. This can keep intrusions at bay, or at least make the life of a potential intruder a bit more difficult. However, these methods can also cause DEVONthink’s synchronization engine to seemingly fail, especially with Bonjour connections. (mehr)
Leaving academia behind (mostly) for now, we come to the tangled mess of information gathered during my personal life. I don’t do clutter and so, until I started using DEVONthink Pro Office (DTPO) a few months ago, there actually wasn’t much information collected and stored. (mehr)
DEVONthink To Go 2.0.6 is waiting for Apple’s App Store review with improvements and many important bug fixes. This maintenance release saves changes to documents every 60 seconds. It also saves them every time you leave the app, e.g., for an incoming call. (mehr)
A question pertaining to the Properties pane recently came up on our forums. This can be found in DEVONthink with the menu command Tools > Show Properties. It seems to imply it’s a place where you can add things like comments, keywords, authors, etc. to any file. However, this is not true. The Properties pane allows you to view and edit the metadata supported by the file, but does not let you add data to the file which is not supported by the file’s structure. (mehr)
