Convert E-Books to PDF

October 5, 2016

ePub and Mobi (the Kindle format) are solid file formats for electronic books. But they are harder to handle than, e.g., PDF or plain text as they are designed for reading on an ebook reader. They are not really suited for using them inside other applications or for long-term archiving. (more)

Print to PDF on iOS

September 22, 2016

iOS 10 comes with a great but somewhat hidden feature: Print to PDF. It allows you to save any document that you can print as a PDF and send it by email or clip it to DEVONthink To Go.

In the Share sheet from any app choose Print. The print preview dialog appears. Now instead of printing “pinch” on the print preview like just as if you’d want to enlarge it. It opens — now as a PDF — in a separate dialog. Choose Share again and send it anywhere you like. (more)

Use Clip To DEVONthink with Opera

May 3, 2016

For those of you who are using the Opera browser for your web searching, it is possible to add our Clip to DEVONthink extension to it. We don’t have an Opera-specific version but with an Opera add-on, you can use the Chrome extension. (more)

Switching from MacJournal

April 26, 2016

We had a MacJournal user contact us, wanting to switch to DEVONthink. While we have no control over how easy or hard this may be, we took a look at what options there are. Nicely, the MacJournal folks have simple but useful export options (we always applaud when developers resist the urge to lock in someone’s data). (more)

Computers and Your Eyes

April 19, 2016

Today it’s normal for most people to stare at computer screens all day long, something that was unbelievable just 25 years ago. Whether we’re shopping online, chatting and tweeting, or working in our DEVONthink databases, we spend a lot of time in the light of our screens. If you are experiencing headaches, blurred vision, watery eyes, or have trouble getting to sleep, here are a few simple tips for you. (more)

Local Database Favorites

DEVONthink’s sidebar allows you to keep your favorite databases always at hand. If you want to have something similar inside a database you can easily set it up yourself like this:

Alternatively you can use tags: … (more)

Need to Move a File? Yoink It!

April 5, 2016

There are many times we need to move a file from one place to another. On Macs with larger screens, you can easily open and arrange windows to drag and drop between them. However, if you’re on a laptop or don’t have the luxury of using a second monitor, this is often not an easy task. Often we resort to using Spaces in Mission Control to give ourselves as much space per application as we can. This can make file moving even trickier. (more)

Note to Self …

February 9, 2016

During the course of the day we often have a need to jot down a quick note in a database. Maybe it’s details on a customer inquiry, the idea for your next great invention, or a reminder to get milk on the way home (and yes, you can put little things like this in DEVONthink too, if you’d like). Cookies for DEVONthink

November 10, 2015

With apologies that the story won’t be as tasty as the title makes it sound.

With OS X El Capitan’s new views on ‘safety’, cookies are no longer shared between Safari and other applications. This can have an effect you might not expect. Even if you have logged in to your account in Safari, capturing a Readability page via the Clip to DEVONthink extension will not honor your choice of font and font size from your Readability account settings. Here is how you can set a per-application cookie for DEVONthink (using Readability.com as the example). (more)

Create Links to a Paragraph in a PDF

September 29, 2015

DEVONthink allows you to get a link to a selected page in a PDF document (Edit > Copy Page Link, hold ⇧Shift to show this open). Power user Chen Guo has created the open-source tool Excerptor that goes even further and  links directly to selected text. (more)
